Given the fourth dimension and resources, I believe anyone tin can learn to draw, or paint, or write. But making fine art is more than only studying anatomy, learning to mix paint, and mastering grammer.

There's a special mental side to making art that deals with vocalization, way, originality, and authenticity. But the skilful news is that, in my stance, you can learn how to main all those things too.

It'south what makes a Picasso feel like a Picasso, and a Hitchcock feel like a Hitchcock.

There are plenty o f tutorials online and in books describing step past step how to draw the human being body or paint a sunset of film a fight scene.

But there'due south no tutorial on finding your voice as an artist.

The reason is that no one actually knows the exact steps they took to strop their style, and even if they did, it wouldn't be much help to anyone but themselves, because your creative style is totally specific to you.

In fact, it is you.

Just as you lot develop your Self and become more like "you" as you abound up, your artistic voice is doing the same thing. With every experience you have, your Cocky changes and grows, and with every piece of art you make, your style changes and grows.

So, although I can't lay out a step by stride guide for you lot to notice your creative style, I do believe there's a general progression through an artist's life, including my own, and I'chiliad going to lay out that progression here.

An Artist's Style Progression

A quick note here: I'm going to become through the full general progression of artistic developments through my life, but this by no means the merely or all-time style to go most it. If y'all haven't or aren't post-obit this path, that's fine! This is merely how I've gone about my path. Feel complimentary to forge your own.

One of my earliest drawings one time I began to be interested in cartoon.

Development #one: Honing the Interest

You lot draw, paint, write, and brand a lot of stuff as a child. Eventually you find the basic art class you enjoy making most.

For me, this ended upwardly beingness drawing.

Hundreds of Pokemon drawings

Development #two: Honing the Craft

Once the interest is planted, you lot swoop in, aiming to better your arts and crafts. You copy other artists, trying to learn how the artwork is made.

For me, this involved copying and cartoon a whole lot of Crewman Moon and Pokemon when I was young.

Aubrey Beardsley

Development #3: Honing Your Taste

You see a piece of art that speaks to yous more than deeply than anything else has earlier.

For me, this happened in college when I first saw the illustrations of Aubrey Beardsley. I saw it once, in a library, and couldn't end thinking about information technology for days.

Development #4: Honing Your Voice

Y'all follow your obsessions and curiosity.

For me this evolved to be mainly scientific topics.

Development #5: Honing Your Style

You notice and pay attention to which elements keep popping up in your artwork.

This leads y'all to discover what makes a slice of fine art await similar yous. This includes colour palettes, overall drawing style, textures, voice/subject, and specific techniques.

For me, something actually clicked when I began making this weird chevron-ish pencil texture in my work. I began noticing it pop up again and again in my work, and eventually it became a major office of my style.

It'due south of import to keep in listen here, that this is a standing evolution, that tin and should keep evolving throughout your life equally an artist. I don't brand that chevron pattern equally much any more because I've since developed other quirks as I've changed and my art has inverse. Only each 1 will lead you to the adjacent if yous follow them.

And so those are what I remember are the bones developments, but at present how do we move through that progression, pushing through each development?

The Stride that Makes it All Happen

There'southward ane crucial step that happens throughout this progression, and without it, nothing volition happen and your manner will never be institute. So what is this undercover pace to find your creative fashion?

Each development is pushed to the next by making more and more art and noticing the creative habits you brainstorm to develop.

These habits are the things that simply begin happening in your artwork most in an automatic, subconscious way. The topics that proceed popping upwards, the pencil texture you continue automatically cartoon.

THOSE are the things that make up your style.

Simply you can't merely choose them, you lot have to find them.

And y'all find them by making lots and lots of art.

Your style is the result of a honed interest, all the things you've absorbed over your lifetime, an appreciation of the art, a refined craft, a sense of curiosity, the ability to notice and follow the leads your work shows you, and finally the repetition of creating art over and over.

Your Mistakes Volition Guide You lot

All the failed pieces, all the work you created where you had no thought what yous were doing and were totally unhappy with the results — all of that is an essential part of the process, and is exactly what will lead you to finding your artistic vocalization.

It's just a matter of persevering through the crude, floundering periods where y'all're trying to effigy out who you are and what you're all near. Just like getting through middle school and then you tin finally be an adult.
